AHRB prepares for demanding debut

Article Abstract:

The UK Arts and Humanities Research Board (AHRB) has two main purposes, to use its additional funding to help pay for research leave and provide money for scholarships, and to oversee postgraduate student courses. The Board will also try to find new money from the business sector and other government departments to help pay for more research into arts and humanities. The AHRB had its first meeting in Oct 1998 and it had already received some 283 applications for research funding. The AHRB has been given 8 million pounds sterling in extra funding for its first year.

There are such things as societies

Article Abstract:

The Association of Learned and Professional Societies is holding a conference to discuss the implications of new technology on professional societies and how changes can be managed successfully. Some societies have widened their operation and have gone into publishing on the Internet, such as The Institute of Physics which also has its own investment portfolio. Others have developed trading departments. Some observers point out traditional professional societies will be threatened by new technology as its can be used to publish journals and disseminate information.

Legal child of an outlaw dad

Article Abstract:

Amber Marks, 18-year-old daughter of renowned cannabis-smuggler and Oxford-educated author Howard Marks, finds the idea of rebelling against her parents somewhat stupid, not least because she does not disapprove of them. She claims to feel no anger for the disruptions of her early years which included being looked after by relatives while her parents were serving prison sentences for drug smuggling. Marks, who is beginning a degree in history at the London School of Economics, simply feels that her parents could have been a little more responsible about money.
