Thumbs down for UKPd9K hellos
Article Abstract:
Proposals by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (Hefce) to set aside UKPd20 mil over a three year period so that "golden hellos" of up to UKPd9,000 can be paid to new lecturers in subjects in which there is a shortage of lecturers have been criticised by employers and lecturers' leaders, who believe that the move will not solve the recruitment crisis and that it could lead to an increase in employment disputes. Hefce stated that its plans are under consultation until 30 April 2003 and as such it would not be appropriate to comment until the details are finalised.

Regulation bill cut by 25%
Article Abstract:
The cost of regulation and red-tape has been reduced by 25% in four years, according to a report by the Higher Education Funding Council for England. However, the study still puts the cost of accountability at UKPd211 mil/yr, despite reforms of bureaucratic teaching quality assessments introduced in 2000, and notes that the internal burden on staff has remained essentially unchanged.
