Today's Student Meets Yesterday's Vietnam
Article Abstract:
Today's high school students have little knowledge of the United States involvement in the Vietnamese War. Educational materials are now being prepared for teachers to use to ameliorate this deficit. A new television series called Vietnam: A Television History is being produced by PBS. It covers the French and American roles in Vietnam from 1945 to 1975. Accompanying instructional materials are available for high school students. Because this war caused deep emotional reactions, it will be a great challenge for the schools to help students gain understanding through objective presentations. Materials from the sixties and seventies, plus findings termed the 'new scholarship' must be used in a way that the lessons of Vietnam can be applied by students to current international situations. This article also contains a summary of the 'new scholarship' findings, a list of Vietnam movies, major lessons learned from Vietnam, and a list of educatonal films.

How to: assess student groupwork
Article Abstract:
College teachers must adopt a fair method for evaluating students working within a group to indicate the level of individual effort while reflecting the achievements of the group as a whole. Students should be appropriately prepared for groupwork, with the subsequent grades allocated according to the individuals' attendance, contribution of ideas, analysis and research, support for other members and contribution to end product. Groupwork is an important aspect of student learning, partly because of employers' requirements and partly because groupwork symbolizes the real nature of learning.

Goind Dutch; how Holland lets insiders and outsider assess faculty strengths and weaknesses
Article Abstract:
In Holland a policy document published in 1985 set out the criteria for quality in higher education. Those managing the institutions would gain more autonomy in exchange for publicly declaring their quality standards. The Dutch procedure involves assessing quality within subject areas, and uses internal and external examination. The academic departments involved have to produce a self-evaluation document. Good and bad aspects of the faculties work should be included.
