Unearthing the secrets of Christ's tomb

Article Abstract:

A team of British archaeologists has been permitted to study the reported burial site of Christ at the church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, Israel. The team was led by professor of medieval archaeology at Oxford University, Martin Biddle, who was urged to study the site by former diplomat G. Freeman-Grenville. Biddle was not allowed to move anything but took measurements and photographs, mostly at night to avoid disruption. Biddle discovered the original edicule dated from the 4th-century, with a tomb dating back to the era of Christ believed to lay underneath. Biddle hopes he may eventually be permitted to restore the tomb.
