Volcano's early warning
Article Abstract:
Cheap, multi-story housing for 570,000 people has been constructed on the foothills of the volcano Vesuvius overlooking the Bay of Naples in Italy, despite the constant threat of eruption. Officials complain rapid evacuation in case of eruption would be impossible. Volcanic activity is monitored by the Vesuvius Observatory in Naples, with a further eruption anticipated at some stage. The Observatory believes it could give about two weeks notice of an eruption. The last major eruption was in 1944 when a large number of homes were swept away and around 50 people killed.

Short degrees to help labour market
Article Abstract:
Italian higher education has had a 70% drop-out rate, which may have been partially due to the five years needed to obtain a degree. Two year courses are being introduced to reduce early leaving. Higher education has been free for 30 years which has led to severe overcrowding and poor student support. Diplomas are now available in a wide range of subjects, including agriculture, engineering, pharmacy and nursing.
