Wasted talents

Article Abstract:

The failure to recognise a child with exceptional talent in the British education system occurs frequently, and even when the child is correctly assessed the school is not equipped to address their educational needs. IQ tests are difficult to use on children because some may just be hard-working rather than gifted. Acceleration through the education system is often thought of as a means of compensating for the greatly intelligent child, although this is not adequate because it does not cater for the emotional and social needs of the child.
