Watchdog mauls LBS and Cambridge quality

Article Abstract:

The Quality Assurance Agency (QAA), a quality watchdog, has criticised the control of academic standards at the London Business School (LBS) and Cambridge University, two of the most prestigious higher education institutions in the United Kingdom. In an audit report issued in week commencing 20 October 2003, the QAA warned that it will only endorse the standard of degrees given out at LBS in the future if key recommendations are acted upon, this follows a call in the previous week for Cambridge to take "as a matter of high priority" a demand for action to be taken to improve standards. The LBS, which has in the past all but ignored the academic infrastructure framework of the QAA, refused to comment on the report, while Cambridge, which is one of the QAA's strongest critics, responded by criticising the quality of the report.

Seven unis 'fail' strict title test

Article Abstract:

Higher education institutions must have maintained an exemplary quality level for five years before obtaining a 'university' title under Quality Assurance Agency proposals. Seven or more UK universities would not meet this criteria, including Central Lancashire, Hertfordshire, De Montfort, Thames Valley, East London, East Anglia and Leeds universities. The title would not be given to any institution that had been required to submit a quality improvement plan or that had failed any teaching quality assessment during the five preceding years.
