When ref fails to blow whistle

Article Abstract:

Flawed research conducted by George Ricarte, a US neuro-scientist, into the dangers of MDMA - commonly known as ecstacy - which was published in the international respected scientific journal "Science" has led to questions being raised about the quality of peer review. While Science, which published a retraction in September 2003 relating to the original research, has applauded the researchers from Johns Hopkins University for investigating the conflicting data that had come into their lab and realising that the drug that had been administered to test subjects was in fact methamphetamine rather than MDMA, others in the scientific field have voiced their dissatisfaction with the fact that Science did not immediately realise that the research was fundamentally flawed.

Article Abstract:

The professor of organic and polymer chemistry and director of the Melville Laboratory for Polymer Synthesis at Cambridge University, who is to return to his home country of Australia in October 2004 after receiving a Federation fellowship, argues that the UK should follow Australia's example and back science with cash and support. The Australian government began supporting the technology sector in 2001 with the introduction of the A$2.9 bil "Backing Australia's Ability" programme, a programme that recently received an additional A$5.3 bil in a second tranche of funding.
