Why are the best degrees for sale?

Article Abstract:

An analysis of research conducted by a team headed by Claire Callender for the Higher Education Funding Council for England and Universities UK which revealed that students who engage in paid work during term-time in order to finance their university education perform less well academically than those who do not have to work. It is argued that steps need to be taken to address this, as it effectively means that, in the main, only the better off will be getting the best degrees.
