Why should a John be a Joan?

Article Abstract:

Hermaphrodite Cheryl Chase has set up the Intersex Society of North America which calls for the abolition of surgery to alter the gender of intersex children. Chase has gone through many years of unhappiness due to the damage she received in an operation to change her from male to female as a young child. City University of London Behavioural Neuro-Endocrine Laboratory Director Melissa Hines points out intersex children should be given counselling and full information of their condition. But she suggests intersex people seem to be happy with the gender they have been given.
