Crystal device production brightens in September

Statistics released by the Quartz Industry Assn of Japan shows an increase of 51.8% in the production of crystal devices for Sep 1999 which translates to 440.3 million units in comparison to the same month in 1998. The production of crystal device for the first six months of FY1999 increased by 30.7% to 2,144,600,000 pieces in comparison to FY1998 figures for the same period. Data also show continuing two-digit gains in a monthly comparison of volume and value to that of FY1998 figures.

Japan's merchandise trade deficit swells as imports soar

Article Abstract:

Japan's merchandise trade deficit, which is exports minus imports, from Jan 1-10, 2001 grew 294.8%, reaching Y471.5 billion. According to the Japanese Finance Ministry, this compares to a deficit of Y119.4 billion for the corresponding period in 2000. Exports in 2001 fell by 10.9%, compared with the corresponding period in the previous year, dropping to Y431.1 billion. Imports posted a 49.3% rise to Y902.9 billion.

A/V imports from China surge ahead

Article Abstract:

Japan's importation of audio-video (A/V) products from China has been increasing due to the latter's low cost of labor, which stands at around 1/10 those of Japan. However, Malaysia has been Japan's biggest import source of mainstay A/V items that include desk top videos and color TVs. In 1998, Japan's demand for color VCRs reached 7.15 million units and the demand could increase to 7.3 million units in 1999.
