DVD looms as newest format
Article Abstract:
DVD's falling prices have begun to bring it into the mainstream, but it may be some time before consumers abandon CDs and magnetic tapes. Recordable and rewritable DVD players and drives have been slow to develop because hardware manufacturers disagree about specifications, and consumers want drives and players to be compatible. Sony predicts a large consumer move to DVD and is working to unify data storage with video recording functions, according to marketing vp Joe Tibensky. TDK, though, plans major investment in CD-R because it is readable on widely available CD-ROM drives, says digital media mgr Frank Kramer. Blank media companies such as Maxell and Fujifilm plan to continue offering magnetic products for the foreseeable future.
