Distributors realize not-so-great expectations
Article Abstract:
Electronics industry distributors realize modest gains in overall revenue and profitability during 1996, as the top 100 distributors report an annual increase of 19% to $28.1 billion. Despite the generally strong showing, the industry's growth rate actually declined from 35%, 26% and 28% in the three preceding years. Twelve of the top 100 distributors report growth rates exceeding 20%, nearly 66% of companies report single-digit growth rates but approximately 33% report a decline in sales. Independent distributors suffer the most severe declines in revenue, as production rates of hard-to-find components increased and inventory levels among manufacturers fell in 1996. Arrow Electronics report the greatest overall revenue for the year, with total sales in excess of $6.5 billion.
