EIA backs export-controls overhaul
Article Abstract:
The Electronic Industries Alliance(EIA) , an electronics industry lobby, is trying to overhaul outdated export procedures and regulations that are affecting sales to what are considered possible enemies of the United States. The method now used to determine who is unfriendly and therefore could possibly pose a security risk has come under attack by United States manufacturers of chips and computers. The application process is long and the MTOPS (millions of theoretical operations per second) method of placing countries in tiers is deemed unwieldy. EIA proposed that different software could be used to process applications particularly for countries who have high MTOPS. The EIA is also trying to get liability exemption for exports of high tech goods. Other groups are also lobbying for export reform.
