Ericsson, IMEC move in on mobile MPEG-4 terminals
Article Abstract:
Ericsson of Sweden and the Interuniversity Micro Electronic Centrum (IMEC) will work jointly on developing working MPEG-4 terminals. Both believe that MPEG-4 is one of the first truly multimedia standards since it encompasses scalability, objects and scene composition. They will focus on the three areas of development, starting with an advanced MPEG-4 decoder operating at low power. IMEC, a research center in Belgium, will also study semiconductor processes smaller than one micron.

Intel holds on to first spot in sales rankings
Article Abstract:
Findings of the latest survey from Dataquest reveal that Intel is the world's biggest semiconductor firm in 1998, in terms of global sales. Intel has previously held the distinction for seven straight years. Figures from the survey show that Intel registered a 4.3% growth rate in 1998 while seven of the top 11 companies reported declines. It is notable that Intel grew while other semiconductor companies were feeling the effects of excess inventory and a depressed market.
