Extra pixels, improved features spur digital camera sales in Japan

Sales of digital cameras in Japan reached nearly 1.5 million units in 1998 and are expected to increase by 30% to 2 million units in 1999. The main factors contributing to the robust sales of digital cameras in the country are the products' improved features, such as ease-of-use, lens performance, fast recording and extra pixels. Seven Japanese manufacturers have developed new digital camera models that offer 2 million pixels.

Sanyo Electric Co Ltd differentiates its digital camera lines from the competition by incorporating features other than picture resolution. While other manufacturers try to outdo each other by introducing models featuring an ever greater number of pixels, Sanyo's digital cameras can handle moving images, record sound and are easy to use. What makes these innovations possible is the Super One chip LSI.
