Merger and acquisition opportunities

Article Abstract:

A number of mergers have taken place in the semiconductor equipment industry since Jul 1996 because of dwindling sales. Plasma & Materials initiated the trend when it purchased Bristol, England-based Electrotech for $146 million. Applied Materials and Millipore completed two other key 1996 purchases. KLA Instruments and Tencor Instruments unveiled an approximate $1.3 billion stock-swap merger in Jan 1997. Their product lines likely will help the new company, KLA-Tencor, to control the process diagnostics market. Other key 1997 transactions have taken place between Lam Research and OnTrak Systems; and Novellus Systems and Varian Associates. Customers have responded favorably to the new shift as part of a globalization trend that will boost distribution. The industry traditionally has avoided large-scale consolidations, but emerging company giants are looking to expand.

See CMOS run

Article Abstract:

Advanced CMOS imaging sensors are expected to replace charge-coupled devices (CCD) in many high-volume applications because CMOS processing is inherently less expensive and allows the integration of additional functions on a chip. Kodak and Motorola have already begun development and their late June 1997 announcement that they been developing products is expected to jump-start the market. In turn, the low-cost components should reduce the cost of digital cameras and other imaging devices. According to industry watchers, other semiconductor companies will soon enter the market, pushing component prices further down. However, to enter the CMOS image sensor market, semiconductor companies need to understand the digital still camera market and have a CMOS sensor design.
