RBOCs begin ISDN push, but market may be fading
Article Abstract:
The RBOCs are finally organized enough to begin offering ISDN service ten years after ISDN was first introduced, but the market may already be fading for ISDN due to competition from new technologies. The RBOCs for many years did not push ISDN, and this is one reason that acceptance of the technology has been slow. In addition, ISDN rates are high and confusing among RBOCs. Most importantly, competitors may now be able to offer better performance for a cheaper cost. ISDN had the field to itself in the 1980s when it was first introduced, but telecommunications has now been deregulated and ISDN is competing with inexpensive, fast cable modems utilizing high speed fiber-optic links promoted by local cable television firms. Cable data service may not be offered in many geographic regions until 1997 or 1998, but it is much faster than ISDN and experts contend it will eventually succeed over ISDN.

Programmable logic sales boom as gate counts surge
Article Abstract:
The two main trends in the high-density programmable logic market are increasing gate counts and rising sales. Gate array vendors are leaving the $3-billion market for more profitable business and leaving programmable logic makers with opportunity to exploit the sub-50,000-gate market, which includes field-programmable gate arrays (FPGA) and complex programmable logic devices (CPLD). With such a wide open market, programmable logic manufacturers are introducing new 100,000-gate devices. Such a high gate count, though, creates a power versus speed dilemma. Two companies that did exceptionally well in 1995 include CPLD maker Altera Corp, which had its revenue double, and FPGA supplier Xilinx Corp, which had a 62% increase in revenue.
