DVC camcorders promise to extend digital technology to new markets
Article Abstract:
The introduction of digital videocassette (DVC) camcorders has boosted the demand for camcorders in Japan. Total camcorder shipments rose from 1.32 million units in 1995-96 to 1.42 million units in 1998, while the percentage of DVC camcorder volume within all camcorder sales leaped from 8% in 1995 to 40% in 1996, and to 75% in 1998. Meanwhile, the demand for digital still cameras in Japan is projected to reach 2 million units in 1999, following a 14.1% growth to 1.4 million units in 1998.

Sharp Corp has introduced its VL-PD3 Digital ViewCam PD palm-top camcorder. The product features the company's proprietary Digital Gamma Brightness Correction technology which compensate exposure values for bright lighting om subjects while minimizing background washout. VL-PD3 also features the DV Fine Filter to improve horizontal resolution by 10%. The camcorder record for 3 hours and 40 minutes from the built-in battery.
