Sanyo's hybrid device plays music, serves as phone

Sanyo has unveiled the RZ-J91 hybrid portable device that serves as a cellular phone and for downloading, recording and playing music. The RZ- J91 features a 2-in color LCD that displays up to 80 characters and uses a front light reflection system. The novel device also comes with a 32MB Secure Multimedia Card that stores 30 minutes of music and provides protection against copyright violations. The RZ-J91 also conforms with Keitai de Music standards for downloading and recording music using a portable phone.

Japan's cellular phone makers re-key global strategies

Japanese cellular phone manufacturers are positioning themselves to take advantage of a boom in global demand. Some analysts predict worldwide demand for cellular phones to top 200 million units in fiscal year 1999 from 140-150 million units the previous year. Japanese manufacturers are particularly tailoring their strategies to the US market, where full-scale digital formatting is almost complete.
