Tektronix's dream team
Article Abstract:
Tektronix Inc has five leading distributors working together under its enhanced distribution program. The distributors, All American Semiconductor, Avnet, Insight electronics, Marshall Industries and Wyle Electronics, work together to manage an in-plant store that provides Tektronix with the parts it needs on a daily basis. The company uses two million surface mount components in its circuit boards every week. The distributors provide 1,200 different types of components on a just-in-time basis. The distributors negotiate the contracts as well as operating details, including the selection of an EDI system and MIS system for Tektronix. The arrangement has eliminated the traditional competition between the distributors and replaced it with a system where they work closely together. The program has reduced Tektronix's lead times from 12 weeks to four weeks.

Steady as she goes...: switches and relay makers have enjoyed smooth sailing, but now what course are they charting?
Article Abstract:
The switch and relay markets are expected to have growth rates of over 6% according to Electronic Economic Outlook, but products must be made smaller and more robust so that they can be incorporated into more applications. Surface mount device development will be a key element in this challenge. Industrial end-users, particularly in Europe, are demanding that switches and relays meet strict standards. Electromechanical devices are still commonly used, despite the availability of solid-state devices, because they are typically much less expensive. Automotive and telecommunications applications are key elements of the relay market, accounting for 18.2% or the total North American market with $233 million worth of shipments in 1995. Customers are said to desire custom configured relays able to provide additional current input.
