Article Abstract:
There have been demonstrations calling for an end to conflict in Colombia, and this is linked to a wave of indiscriminate kidnappings, as well as economic recession. The demonstrators seek peace, but there is disagreement on how to achieve this. The government has started to negotiate with the guerrilla group FARC, but there is general disbelief as to FARC's sincerity. The right wing paramilitaries and left wing FARC tend to operate in rural areas, while the demonstrations are an urban phenomenon.
