Ada technology: current status and cost impact
Article Abstract:
Ada is a general-purpose language that many commercial organizations are considering using as their standard high-order language (HOL). The main difficulties are the lack of efficient compilers and the high initial cost of developing software in Ada. The Dept of Defense has set up the Ada Compiler Validation Capability test suite that has over 3,000 tests. Benchmarking of Ada compilers was carried out with the goal of evaluating the performance of object code generated in terms of the execution efficiency and memory requirements. Eight benchmark programs were used. The results show that Ada technology has matured enough to be used in the embedded environment. It can be used on all general-purpose 32-bit microprocessors; with minor reservations it can be used on 16/32-bit microprocessors and reduced-instruction-set computing microprocessors; and it can be used, with reservations, on older 16-bit microprocessors. The cost model indicates that using Ada could result in significant savings over the entire life cycle, particularly in the maintenance phase.

A techno-economic assessment of application-specific integrated circuits: current status and future trends
Article Abstract:
ASIC methodologies encompass programmable logic devices, gate arrays, standard cells, and full custom, mostly in 2-mM CMOS, produced in volumes of one to 100K units per year, with complexities of 500 to 20,000 gates per device. "Gates per pin" is the most important total-cost factor, hence products comprised of ASIC cost less than products using SSI-MSI, or even those combining standard LSI-VLSI and SSI-MSI, when the ASIC gate per pin is two to three times greater. Gate arrays at low production levels, and full custom ICs at high production levels are comparable in cost-effectiveness. ASIC production costs, design scheduling and functionality are discussed.
