Architecture-driven synthesis techniques for VLSI implementation of DSP algorithms
Article Abstract:
High-level logic-synthesis and module generation tools can be used for the rapid design and implementation of very-large-scale integration (VLSI) digital signal processing (DSP) devices as application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs). DSP has become an important and rapidly growing technology for cost-effective implementation of algorithms for real-time video, audio, image processing, control and speech processing. DSP synthesis, though, requires tools for high-level analysis, optimization and simulation of such algorithms. Four 'CATHEDRAL' silicon compilers are developed for implementing DSP silicon architectures optimized to four classes of applications. The architectures are characterized as hard-wired bit-serial data-paths, microcoded multiprocessors, cooperating bit-parallel data-paths and regular arrays. Details and applications of the compilers are discussed.

Three Vision Algorithms for Acquiring Workpieces from Bins
Article Abstract:
Automation in industry requires workpieces to be well organized. Vision algorithms enable computer-controlled robots to acquire a single piece from a bin containing randomly placed identical pieces. This replaces manual labor in most steps of a manufacturing process. Three such algorithms are discussed in detail. Weak and strong points of the algorithms are analyzed. A flow chart of image analysis and arm motion tasks is included.
