Array pattern control and synthesis
Article Abstract:
A technique for designing efficiently shaped pencil beam antenna patterns is presented. Antenna pattern distribution is designed based on the placement of zeros in the array polynomial. Several distributions based on the proper placement of pattern function zeros are discussed. Also analyzed are the pattern synthesis process using robust and low Q distributions for linear array and circular planar arrays. This method provides variable side lobe level pencil beam patterns. By adjusting side lobes or groups of side lobes in level, an efficient shaped beam can be derived.

Automatic placement and routing techniques for gate array and standard cell designs
Article Abstract:
The two most critical parameters of automatic placement are routing and timing constraints. Methods of automatic placement and interconnection routing are presented, including gate array and standard cell technologies, and various metrics used in placement algorithms are discussed. A model of placement difficulty is used to illustrate current layout problems. The role of the mathematical property of convexity and the use of a convex quadratic objective function as a practical layout metric are studied.

The Very Large Array: Design and Performance of a Modern Synthesis Radio Telescope
Article Abstract:
The Very Large Array (VLA) is a powerful telescope synthesized by twenty-seven movable antennas, each with a twenty- five meter diameter, spread over distances of up to thirty kilometers. The design of the VLA and other synthesized arrays is studied in array design, sensitivity concerns, phase stability, signal transmission system, delay and correlator system, control system, and data-reduction requirements. Synthesis images are corrected using data-reduction algorithms.
