Electronic CAD frameworks
Article Abstract:
The central goal of a computer-aided design (CAD) framework is to reduce the time and cost of developing a CAD system that meets the needs of the end users through the integration and management of multiple programming, library, data base management, interface and other tools and facilities at multiple levels of abstraction. The CAD framework consists of all the facilities that the CAD tool developer, CAD system integrator and chip or system designer need to accomplish their respective tasks. Such frameworks typically built on the underlying operating system and include file services, program services, network services, multiple CAD tools, local and 'foreign' tool integrators and interfaces, design management and methodology services and user input/output facilities. Each of these is described at length. The implementation, history and future of CAD frameworks are also discussed.

Statistical-model-based speech enhancement systems
Article Abstract:
Statistical-model-based speech enhancement systems follow a model-based approach developed via breakthroughs in the statistical modeling of speech signals after the introduction of the hidden Markov model (HMM) and vector quantization. The systems aim to address the three main goals of speech enhancement, namely improvement of perceptual enhancement, increase of robustness of speech coders to input noise and increase of robustness of speech recognition systems to input noise. Research results show that the appropriate selection of HMMs for signal and noise and the distortion measure is critical to the robust design of speech enhancement systems. Focus is also placed on mean squared error and maximum a posteriori estimation since they provide optimal estimators.
