Intelligent alarm processing in power systems
Article Abstract:
Expert systems can help illustrate disturbances to a power system operator as an alternative to conventional alarm processing systems. Electric utilities may operate with ease, but uncontrollable events such as sudden load fluctuations, equipment failure and atmospheric changes can force operators to make important decisions. Operators may be able to work faster and more effectively with better information offered in expert systems. More information does not necessarily imply better information. Operators should also be careful to distinguish between intelligent alarm processors and fault diagnosis systems. Advancements in the computer industry should benefit the integration of expert systems in energy management systems.

Review of expert systems in bulk power system planning and operation
Article Abstract:
Expert systems can help in power system analysis, operation and planning. Expert systems incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) for use with complex mental activities and offer a variety of advantages including permanence, easy transferring or reproduction, easy documentation, more consistent and reproducible results and low cost. Human expertise has its own advantages including greater creativity, larger learning curve, more direct use of complex sensory input and the ability to look at the big picture and examine the interrelationships between smaller parts. Expert systems must be introduced slowly and deliberately so users and developers can acquaint themselves with the tools and the process.
