The quasiparticle view of wave propagation
Article Abstract:
The quantum transport domain in wave propagation, which combines wave and particle methods, presents challenges that are addressed with a quasiparticle theory to describe the properties of the wave train. Time dependent wavepackets or steady state beams, when excited or propagated through time-inconsistent and in homogeneous overmoded media, present hindrances to the use of exact model techniques. Quasiparticle theory does away with infinities of the ray technique's being present at cusps so that the kinetic properties of the quasiparicles represent the average local amplitude and wave number of the wave train. Wave descriptions and propagation problems that are presented serve as the basis for mathematical techniques that reach specific matrix and transform representations for both wave and kinetic equations.

Propagation considerations in satellite communication systems
Article Abstract:
The design of a satellite communication system must estimate and accommodate propagation degradations. Both tropospheric effects and ionospheric effects must be taken into consideration. Signal quality and system availability are affected by propagation phenomena; they may cause a system outage. Propagation research is underway to provide estimates of the nature and level of signal impairments. One result of this research is internationally-agreed upon system requirements for fixed-satellite service, small-margin systems, and mobile-satellite services.
