A digital prescription for X-ray overload
Article Abstract:
Large-scale picture-archiving and communications system (PACS) networks are just being implemented that transmit and store diagnostic images, as well as track patients and handle billing and equipment scheduling. Rapid production of radiologic images is often vital to saving lives, but substantial time may be lost in the capturing, development and transfer of the images to the operating room. A PACS significantly reduces the time of the process, but it requires digital imaging output. The only technologies suitable for this are recent models of computed tomography, magnetic-resonance imaging, nuclear imaging, ultrasound, and computed radiographic tools. The latter technology may be most suitable, but the high cost of image readers must decline to push PACS sales. The three types of networks in a PACS, storage technology, displays, example systems and standards issues are also discussed.

Power electronics' polluting effects
Article Abstract:
The electromagnetic pollution caused by power distribution systems has become more common with the increasing use of electrical devices with alternating current technology. Audio noise, overheating equipment and insulation faults are just some of the symptoms of current or voltage distortion. The nonlinear loads and switching combinations have a devastating impact on harmonic voltage distribution valued at 13.3 billion US dollars damage over 12 months.
