Electricity: The Future
Article Abstract:
The proliferation of high technology and an increasing dependence on reliable electrical energy invariably go together. In the United Kingdom, as elsewhere, steps are being taken to make certain the power is there when needed. By the end of the twentieth century, nuclear generators may provide up to thirty per cent of the energy required, traditional coal, perhaps sixty per cent, and hydroelectric along with oil, the remaining ten per cent. However, according to a study carried out by the Policy Studies Institute and the Royal Institute of International Affairs, the year 2040 could bring Britain's reliance on imported fossil fuels up to forty per cent. Additional nuclear capacity, as of the mid-1980s, appears to be the only practical alternative.
