Bacteria will cleanse water contaminated by MTBE and ammonium perchlorate
Article Abstract:
Envirogen Inc. of Lawrenceville, NJ, and Envirex Products Group of Waukesha, WI, are consolidating their respective technologies to treat groundwater that is polluted with ammonium perchlorate and methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE). Envirogen will use its propanotrophs bacteria catalyst in Envirex's fluidized-bed reactors to test the new technology in treating groundwater polluted by MTBE in Reno, NV. Concerning ammonium-perchlorate-contaminated groundwater, both companies are developing the treating technology with Gencorp Aerojet Inc., a Sacramento, CA-based rocket motor manufacturer.

A dual approach to NOx control
Article Abstract:
The Transportation Technology R and D Center of Illinois has developed two methods of cutting up to 50%-60% of nitrogen oxide emissions from diesel engines. In the first method, the center utilized a perfluoro dioxo membrane to pump oxygen-abundant air into the diesel engine. As a result, nitrogen oxide emissions have been trimmed by 70% and a lesser fuel consumption, from 5%-7%, has also been observed. In the second method, the diesel-engine exhaust has been treated with an unstable form of nitrogen to reduce emission of nitrogen oxides.
