Codifying Human Knowledge for Machine Reading
Article Abstract:
Knowledge systems or expert systems are assumed to be products of research towards the next generation of computer systems. The lack of tools and engineers hinders the development of knowledge systems and the integration of them into user environments. Next-generation projects pursue large-scale knowledge systems through automated translation of documents into knowledge bases, cooperative problem- solving architecture, generic problem-solving shells, and multilevel reasoning systems.

Reading Text From Visual Display Units (VDUs)
Article Abstract:
The increased use of computers has led to an increased necessity of reading from a visual display unit (VDU). A summary of research of factors affecting people who read text from VDUs is presented. Situational factors, both external and internal, affect performance. Research indicates that system factors, text factors and personal factors are variables which influence performance. Possibilities for further research are discussed.

Text Files
Article Abstract:
Computer systems often store information in forms that are incomprehensible to humans, such as program object code. UNIX, however, stores user profiles in human-readable form so that they can be easily modified with a text editor. The Caltech Intermediate Format for designing integrated-circuit chips also described each feature by a line of text for simpler communication.
