Coming into land at the home base: the diversity and location of many former MoD sites poses problems for its re-use as new housing land, but Oxfordshire's RAF Alconbury is an exception
Article Abstract:
The need for development sites is increasing, with brownfield sites the first choice by planners for new housing. Alternatives also have to be considered, such as much of the now-redundant Ministry of Defence land. However former military bases are often not well served by the road network. RAF Alconbury in Oxfordshire is however sited close to the A1 and A604 roads and a main railway line, but is better suited for employment purposes. Mixed use developments could be the solution, incorporating houses, schools, recreational facilities and employment.

Going for gold: the 'winner takes all' form of competitive bidding is becoming increasingly common and the hosting of the Millennium Exhibition is no exception
Article Abstract:
The 'winner takes all' form of competitive bidding to host major sporting or cultural events such as the Olympics or the Millennium Exhibition, is becoming more prevalent. All competitors bid to win but often there are benefits even if they lose. More than 100 operators showed interest in running The Millennium Exhibition initially, reduced to a first short list of 15 and then four. Operators are preparing packages which they hope will attract the commission.

Weaving a web to deliver the goods
Article Abstract:
Forthcoming online shopping services via the Internet worldwide communications network are unlikely to threaten conventional shopping practices even if they become relatively successful. Retail experts do not anticipate a major change in consumer shopping habits with the onset of home delivery services. Town centres and out-of-town retail parks will still be the focal point of retail trade.
