Computers and epidemiology
Article Abstract:
As computers become increasingly important in society, the threat of computer viruses takes on a new dimension. The effects of computer viruses is being studied in depth. Statistical data is being collected from actual incidents in order to calculate the true number of infections. Also, computer simulation is being employed to study the effects of a virus spread. However, the rate of infection appears to be less than originally thought, and few MS-DOS-based viruses have managed to survive. Also, the centralized response and control within an organization has proved to be a particularly effective deterrent against computer virus infections. Detailed is an overview of computer virus technologies. Areas discussed include the biological analogy, constructing a theory on the spread of disease, real world correlation, common defenses and a case study.
