Article Abstract:

Cheshire County Council is an English local government bdy which has used geographic information systems (GIS) for more than two decades. A geographic information unit was set up in 1989 and provides services such as advice, spatial analyses and cartographic services. The unit will be divided into a cartography production unit and a research unit. There are new challenges facing UK local government such as constraints on resources and the unit has to adapt to meet these challenges.

Caught in the act of chasing data

Article Abstract:

Geographic information systems can be used for data capture by local government, as is shown by the experience of Cannock Chase District Coucil, England. ICL Local Government provided the hardware and software for the project. Data Capture is an expensive part of setting up a GIS system, and data needs to be accessible for different departments within local government. The project is almost completed and looks likely to be a successful local government tool.

GIS: dead or alive?

Article Abstract:

GIS should be part of an IS strategy for town planners, according to Dr Richard Burkmar, consultant. 'Off-the-shelf' solutions hardly exist as users' needs are usually very complicated. Spatial analysis, decision-making and policy development require good information and relevant systems.
