The outbreaks of violence between Christians and Muslims in Indonesia's Spice Islands port of Ambon have evolved from resentments against Muslim immigrants. Despite Indonesia's 90% Muslim population, Ambon is shared by both groups, but the ethnic conflict has simmered long enough to result in endemic violence that the country cannot control. Its continuation is a concern as the nation approaches its first free elections in almost 50 years.
