European Union set to trim funding for next five-year pre-competitive collaborative research program
Article Abstract:
The research ministers of Europe have agreed to pare down spending for the Fifth Framework R&D Program, which governs cross-border, collaborative research in the European Union for the period 1999-2003. The five-year budget will be $15.21 billion, which is 0.8% lower than that expended for the Fourth Framework R&D Program. Some expressed their disappointment with the decision, which was influenced by national governments' policy to reduce their federal spending, because it could set back efforts to move Europe on the forefront of technology,

EC tackles 'innovation in the nineties.' (Perspectives )
Article Abstract:
The EC has allocated additional funds for its Strategic Program for Innovation and Technology Transfer (SPRINT). The program seeks to encourage technological innovation in the small- and medium-sized industries. SPRINT coordinates the forming of partnerships between existing industrial networks, which also serves to eliminate costly duplication of research efforts. France, in particular, is addressing the needs of the information technology industry through Groupe Bull's Distributed Computing Model, an information sharing strategy.

East-West talks look to R&D to clean up Europe's polluted air and water

An East-West conference on Building an Environmentally Strong All-European Economy has singled out research and development (R&D) as a potential tool for cleaning up Europe's polluted air and water. The conference brought together 95 specialists on innovation-based industry and was organized by The Academy for East-West Economic Cooperation. Such focus on R&D is seen to generate research opportunities for manufacturing and service companies in the West.
