Experiments in Teleterminal Design
Article Abstract:
Bell Laboratories combined an electronic business telephone and a display and gave these teleterminals to users to test the responses to the systems. Menus and tree structures simplified use of the teleterminals. The user moves through tree node functions with relabelable buttons. Users could program their own customized trees and received progress reports continually from the system. Error messages were constructed to seem friendly to the user and to aid in the use of the tree. User response was generally strongly favorable but was affected by each person's own particular bias.

Automating electronic design
Article Abstract:
Computer-aided design (CAD) is becoming more prominent in electronic design, and is transforming the design process. There are currently more than 73,000 CAD workstations installed worldwide, compared to 7,000 in 1982. The market research firm Dataquest predicts that the CAD tools market, $1.4 billion in 1986, will grow to $3 billion by 1990. The availability of PC-based CAD systems and the growing acceptance by engineers contributes to the proliferation. CAD systems with application-specific ICs enable inexperienced engineers to design complex circuitry.

Process Design by Computer
Article Abstract:
Computer-Aided Process Planning (CAPP) systems plan the operation of machine tools or workstations through numerical control or process planning. Metcut Research Associates Inc's process planning system consists of a Cuttech microplanning system and a Cutplan macroplanning system. Because the system uses a problem-solving approach, it can learn through addition of new data. Diagrams illustrate present and future process planning systems.
