Fabrication Issues for Next-Generation Circuits
Article Abstract:
Circuit-fabrication technology is one of the driving forces behind the development of the next generation of computers. Because line widths of semiconductor circuits have not yet reached the minimum value of 0.25 micrometers, there is still room for scaling down. Problems with making complex, layered patterns in circuit material include generating the masks and achieving a good yield of complicated patterns. Interconnection technology is the limiting factor of speed performance and size reduction. Increasing levels of connection and using metal silicides for interconnection are attempts at reducing interconnections. High power levels also present problems for high-speed logic circuits. A projection of requirements for a one million transisitor chip are given.

Next-Generation Software
Article Abstract:
Three developments in software technology will be important for the fifth-generation of computers. Logic programming, associated with Prolog, aids in programming by using logical constraints. Object- oriented programming, like Smalltalk-80, builds up systems as a collection of data objects. Exploratory programming develops complex applications incrementally in fragments of programs.

The Next 25: Agenda For the U.S
Article Abstract:
A permanently manned space station in near-orbit is the key to cheaper space exploration. Enhancement of space-communications, earth-observations satellites and materials processing in space should all occur by 2008. Space research should be done peacefully but will require renewed economic commitment.
