Fibre and copper both point the way to the future
Article Abstract:
Future computer networks are likely to be based on a combination of optical fibre and twisted pair cable. Both types of wiring conform to the Open System Interconnection standard and major network hardware suppliers support the fibre distributed data interface (FDDI). The new twisted pair distributed data interface (TPDDI) will apply to copper cables and is likely to become an industry standard. The two types are likely to be used to complement eachother. When planning networks, provision should be made for future expansion and protection from electromagnetic interference.

Optical illumination
Article Abstract:
Fibre optics are easy to install and can solve many lighting problems which contractors may encounter. Polymethyl methacrilate (pmma) cables offer greater flexibility over glass cables when distances greater than 10 mt are involved. Glass cables above this length distort colour, whereas pmma can be used up to 30 mt. The benefits of fibre optic lighting systems are that they are cost-effective, produce in theory limitless light sources requiring little maintenance, allow access to difficult to light areas, and are safe.

High fibre diet
Article Abstract:
3M Telecom Systems has launched its Volition Cabling System for managing fibre data networks. The new system is a new, low-cost approach to affordable fibre data networks and is based on a special interconnect system. Pinacl Communications Systems is the first Volition integration professional in the UK. The data cabling market us worth some 6.1 billion pounds sterling a year in western Europe.
