Helping new leaders succeed
Article Abstract:
There are seven problems encountered by technologists who are promoted to managerial positions. These problems should be resolved in order to foster the needed developmental climate in an organization. The problems are: mismatch between personality and demand of a manager's job, poor understanding of the job, managers are not trained to be agents of career development, poorly functioning dual ladder, lack of performance feedback, lack of social support and the challenges of developing a managerial identity.

Limited by design: R&D laboratories in the U.S. National Innovation System
Article Abstract:
A good understanding of the missions, histories, behavior and structure of the US' 16,000 R&D laboratories is important in the creation of sound policy regarding those labs and their maximum use for innovation. These research institutions must be made to contribute to the efforts expended by universities, industry and the non-profit sector. Understanding the differences between these federal laboratories might be a daunting task but it might be the only method for creating an effective policy.

Risk was his friend: edison's legacy to innovation leaders
Article Abstract:
Thomas Alva Edison is most famous as an inventor, but innovation leaders interested in increasing the productivity of research organizations can also learn much from the way he made his research efforts fruitful for business. Unlike many contemporary researchers, it was not profit but technical accomplishment that was the main motivation for Edison. Independence, the ability to make critical choices and willingness to take risks were also factors for Edison' success as an inventor.
