Article Abstract:
Many local authorities are giving sustainable development priority in their development plans, but a method of sustainability appraisal is required, to integrate environmental, social and economic objectives. CAG Consultants aimed to establish a sustainability appraisal when it was invited to tender for the environmental appraisal of the new strategy for the Countryside Commission. A set of checklists were developed to show how Commission policies and programmes could be adapted to promote sustainability more fully.

SW lacks a sustainable regional strategy, conference told
Article Abstract:
The recent South West Regional Planning Conference discussed how the South West region has been affected by defence cutbacks, job reductions, and a decline in mining, fishing, and tourism. It was suggested that a balance needs to be created between wealth conservation and creation; and that the diversity of the countryside, villages and towns should be maintained. An overview of the speeches made at the conference are included.

Indicating the possible: the goal of sustainable development requires the adoption of 'indicators' in order to assess the progress of technologies and methodoligies used
Article Abstract:
Assessing whether development is sustanaible or not requires the adoption of indicators to monitor the progress of technologies and methodologies used. Agenda 21 called for indicators to be developed to provide a sound base for decision making. However the government responded to Agenda 21 by stating that environmental indicators are not always indicators of sustainability.
