How companies kill fundamental research - a 'TOOtorial.'
Article Abstract:
Some companies have an innate tendency to challenge and oppose visionary thinking which adversely affect the success of their R&D initiatives. While this is understandable since R&D priorities cost money and resources, it must be pointed out that scientific achievements were made by visionaries who were able to realize their visions in the face of opposition. The seven 'TOO' reasons why firms destroy fundamental research are: too incompatible with core businesses, too late, too difficult technically, too hard to attract needed talent, too hard to capture value as a business, too long to commercialization and too expensive.

Metrics to evaluate R,D&E
Article Abstract:
The International Center for Research on the Management of Technology (ICRMOT) is funding a study of research, development and engineering (R,D&E) metrics to further understand their concepts and thus improve their use in the industry. Results showed that the best metrics depend on the goals of the R,D&E activity as they vary from applied projects to competency-building programs to basic research explorations.

Using DEA to evaluate 29 Canadian textile companies - considering returns to scale
Article Abstract:
The Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) was utilized to assess the performance of 29 Canadian textile firms in 1994. Outcomes related to efficiency scores and return to scale of 29 Canadian textile firms were achieved by employing the Charnes, Cooper and Rodes (CCR) model in DEA. The evaluation also involved consideration of returns to scale factor to decrease inefficient inputs associated with the use of DEA.
