IEC kills last chance for a single fieldbus standard
Article Abstract:
Foundation Fieldbus' (FFs) proposal for an international fieldbus standard called IEC 61158 Data Link Layer and Application Layer was rejected by the National Committees of the International Electrotechnical Commission of Geneva, Switzerland, in October 1998. The Austin TX-based FF's proposal was rejected mainly because of lack of conformance testing. FF President John Pittman blamed the rejection on the negative campaign against the FF standard by Karslruhe, GE-based Profibus International which offers an alternative standard known as the Cenelec EN 50170.

Will international fieldbus standards be stalled by patents?
Article Abstract:
Endress+Hauser of Reinach, Switzerland, through a routine patent check, has discovered that some vital parts of a proposed international fieldbus standard are protected by patents belonging to rival firm Fisher-Rosemount of Eden Prairie, MN. The company, which is wary of patent infringement lawsuits arising from products designed from the proposed standard, has asked both the Comite Europeen du Normalisation and the International Electrotechnical Commission to withdraw their respective standards until the resolution of the legal issue.

Fieldbus gets official approval
Article Abstract:
The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) has approved the fieldbus communications protocol for process instrumentation with its approval of documents for the data link layer and application layer of the IEC 61158 Fieldbus standard. The documents were approved by 86% of the voting members of the IEC SC65C committee. The voting results are subject to review by the IEC Committee of Action which has ordered changes in the specifications before the documents can be considered an International Standard.
