Learn from Warren Buffett's 'way'
Article Abstract:
The research department in an organization can learn much from the principles of Warren Buffett. Buffett is one of America's richest people and has been recognized as the world's greatest investor. His success comes from studying company reports and its fundamental economies. He believes that it is essential to maintain candor and to be able to resist institutional imperatives to gain new insights. The same principles can be applied to industrial research. Managers need to encourage competition-based learning which encourages candor and resistance to institutional imperatives.

Monitoring projects - it's more than reading reports
Article Abstract:
An essential element in the success of research projects is the level of professional performance of project managers. Although good people skills are also important, it can only be apparent if the manager has a good track record of performance. The project manager needs to be constantly involved with all aspects of the research by assuming a proactive role and actively participating with the assigned staff. The project manager needs to focus on three major areas: the people, the actual work functions and the project reviews.

Tracking your competitors
Article Abstract:
The BOC Group Technical Center proposes a structured and rigorous approach for monitoring and tracking the competition among industrial R&D organizations. The process aims to develop a strategic profile of all its major competitors, as well as their latest patents and publications. This may be accomplished through constant review of published information and participation in professional meetings and trade shows. Customer feedback and input from industry watchers are also important.
