Lighting
Article Abstract:
A 1990 European Community Council Directive laid down new legislation to ensure employers provided their staff working on computer terminals with appropriate lighting that would minimise screen reflection. The laws will take effect with respect to new installations from Jan 1993 and Jan 1997 will be the date that everyone will need to meet the requirements. This could lead to a considerable increase in business for electrical contractors who will need to be careful that installed equipment meets the legislation. More work may also arise in the area of low voltage lighting following new intelligent transformers that can overcome previous problems with this safe form of illumination.

A sporting chance for lighting
Article Abstract:
With the increasing demand for high quality sports facilities, the lighting designer has to provide a well thought out, appropriate illumination. Different sports require different types of lighting. Floor sports will be best served by high level discharge sources, aerial sports need low glare lighting such as luminous ceilings. Swimming pools need high illumination while in social areas, lights can be used to create a relaxing and friendly atmosphere. Equestrian sports need good, even lighting. Consideration must also be given to external lighting.
