Market trends for electrical contractors
Article Abstract:
It is difficult to obtain detailed information about the structure of the electrical contracting sector in the UK, as statistics tend to vary considerably. However, it is clear that companies employing up to three people account for a large proportion of all companies involved in the sector, and that a very small number of companies account for a large proportion of its total value output. Companies are generally not achieving large enough margins to allow them to invest in new plant, equipment and management systems.

Retail sector on upswing says new report
Article Abstract:
The UK retail sector is now showing signs of recovery after a period of severe financial difficulties, according to the Building Services Research and Information Association. This will bring benefits for companies involved in mechanical and electrical work, as the retail sector accounts for 22% of all non-residential work for these companies. Mechanical and electrical services represent around 21% of the overall cost of building a retail outlet, but this rises to 30% for hypermarkets and supermarkets.

Born (again) in the USA
Article Abstract:
New construction in the US has not expanded as rapidly as observers had predicted, despite strong economic growth. This means that electrical contractors are still relying heavily on maintenance work. Existing customers account for 70% of their maintenance business. Many contractors are now becoming involved in new areas, including fibre optics, LAN wiring and cctv. They are also taking on more design and redesign responsibility.
