Modern military technology gets a commercial look
Article Abstract:
The US military has become heavily-reliant on the commercial-electronics industry for its military-equipment requirements as a result of smaller armed forces and a vastly-cut defense budget. The development marks a reversal from the technology flow during the Cold War era, when the US military developed technologies like infrared sensing and the Global Positioning System that eventually found commercial applications. Other government agencies and the Pentagon established different partnership programs, such as the 1982 Small Business Innovation Research Program of the US Small Business Administration, to capitalize on the manufacturing and development capabilities of the private sector and to satisfy the military's requirements for new technology.

Surface-mount packages extend diodes past 5.8 GHz

L3 Communucations' Narda Microwave-East Semiconductor Operation of Lowell, MA, has introduced a true surface-mount package for tape-and-reel assembly which is capable of operation beyond 5.8 GHz. The MicroPak PIN family of diodes combines the MilliPak diode housing technology with conventional diode designs. Among its applications are high-speed switching, high-power switching, amplifier protection circuitry and magnetic resonance imaging circuitry.
