The development of a specialist work system approach in managing productivity proved effectual in enhancing business practices at NEC. The decision to adopt such a scheme was made after company officials experienced difficulties in employing seniority-based promotion standards. The program did not only decrease the time allotted for developing memory cells by as much as 50%, but also enhance the company's computer-aided chip design. The program further improved the decision-making capacity of management employees, while allowing them to try modifications and new ideas.
