New U.S. diesel regulations for engines and fuel

Article Abstract:

The US Environmental Protection Agency has issued a proposal for new emission standards for diesel engines and diesel-fuel requirements. The agency's aim is to reduce the sulfur content of diesel fuel from 500 ppm to 15 ppm. The standards are designed to cut pparticulate output from diesel-powered vehicles by 90% and oxides-of-nitrogen emissions by 95%. The implementation is expected to reduce oxides-of-nitrogen emissions from diesel-powered vehicles by 2.8 million tons, particulate emissions by 110,000 tons and nonmethane hydrocargon emissions by 305,000 tons annually by 2030.

Refinery output drops

Article Abstract:

The American Petroleum Institute (API) reported that US petroleum capacity utilization dropped to a 92.6% in 1999, the lowest in four years, although operable capacity increased 3.1% to 16.3 million bbl/d. At the end of 1999, crude-oil and petroleum-product inventories were 939.2 million bbl which were 12.7% lower than those of Dec 1998, a decrease of 136 million barrels for 1999. The API attributed the decline in output to production cuts by OPEC.

Membranes enhance lube dewaxing

Article Abstract:

Mobil Oil Corp and WR Grace and Co are among the recipients of the 1999 Kirkpatrick Chemical Engineering Achievement Award. The two companies are recognized for their joint development of an innovative membrane- separation technology designed to ease lubricant dewaxing. Labeled Max- Dewax, the membrane-based process allows the separation of the solvent from the mixture even before distillation.
